MLK Day of Service 2011
See statement from event below:

We had a wonderful day of community service engaging our youth. About 50 - 60 volunteers participated in this historic day.

Volunteers distributed over 300 packages of emergency preparation information, specifically flood preparation and/or evaluation procedures to residents’ homes in the First Ward. Also included in the packages was homeowners/renters flood insurance literature. 211 cards and bottles of sanitizer cleanser.

After returning from their deployment, volunteers were served a scrumptious lunch. The following excerpts are some of the remarks shared during our debriefing discussion:

“We walked around and had fun on this day of helping our neighbors”
“It was a great idea to inform residents on the dangers of flooding and how to prepare beforehand. The information was well received by our residents.” -- Youth from BUDS (Brothers United Developing Spiritually) Raheem Smallwood, Adviser

“This was an informative day of opportunity of service for our youth (particularly our AKATeens). Instead of resting at home, it enable them to come out to volunteer and give back to their community.” -- Amy Allen, Vice President, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Pi Xi Omega Chapter

“Glad to see that a lot of young people participated in the historic Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service. A lot of important information was shared.” -- Brothra Burns, Community Emergency Response Team (CERT).
